Saturday Update

Just a quick post before I head to Toronto to watch the UFC fight at Real Sports Bar & Grill.

This morning, I did another 8am Body Pump class. I could have gone to a later class but I like the 8am one for three reasons:
1) It’s the first class of the morning so I can get there early and get a good spot. I like to be near the mirrors so I can admire my muscles check my form during class.
2) There’s another Body Pump class right after so I never have to put my weights away; without fail, someone will always come up to me and ask if they can use my equipment. No clean up!
3) It gives me more time to enjoy the morning, especially on sunny days like today.

After Pump, Josh and I went to The Crepe Kitchen for lunch.

Good thing we got there early because it got pretty packed shortly after this photo was taken. We started out with some coffee served in a french press coffee maker. So much more fun than a boring old pot!

My crepe was filled with brie cheese, chicken and mushrooms, while Josh got the Mediterranean with goat cheese, spinach and peppers.

We considered ordering a dessert crepe after, since the savoury ones were so good, but decided against it since we’ll probably be having a pretty heavy meal tonight.

That’s all for now. GSP, baby!!

Got my hair did…

I went in for a little trim today and while I’m loving how my hairdresser updated my look, I’m a little freaked out by how short she cut my side bangs. I’ve had them short before but that was in my previous life as a couch potato. I have a feeling these are gonna be a huge pain in the behind during my workouts – time to invest in some bobby pins!

I also got my eyebrows threaded today and, I have to say, grooming takes up a heck of a lot of time. The day has just flown by despite the fact that I woke up super early to watch the royal wedding to do my weekly grocery shop before heading to the gym. I feel like kind of a party pooper for not watching (especially since I’m technically a British citizen) but I was only interested in seeing Kate’s dress and figured I could look at the pictures later.

I got some cool stuff on sale at Whole Foods today – organic strawberries for $1.99 (thanks to A Foodie Stays Fit for the heads up) and Celestial vanilla rooibos tea for $2.99. I didn’t realize there are only two Whole Foods locations in all of Ontario and one of them just happens to be in Oakville. I will never complain again about having to drive twenty minutes to get there!

After Whole Foods, it was off to the gym for Body Attack, which I’ve been neglecting lately. I seem to go through workout phases where I become obsessed with one or two classes or activities to the exclusion of everything else. Right now, it’s running and Body Pump and, to a lesser extent, RPM. Meanwhile, my enthusiasm for Body Attack and Body Step is waning. I’m sure the reverse will be true in a month or so. I might be fickle but at least it compels me to switch up my workout routine on a regular basis.

No major plans for tonight, just dinner and a movie with Josh. We might see “Insidious” although I’m not sure my heart can handle it. We’ll see if I chicken out or not…

You mean you don’t get a cheat meal when you’re maintaining?

Much like weight loss, figuring out how much you should eat to maintain your new weight involves some trial and error. And it seems that I have erred. Since switching to maintenance, I’ve gained a little and by a little I mean almost 5 pounds. Eek!

I’d like to think it’s from all the strength training I’ve been doing, but by body fat percentage has also increased. It works out to about 2 pounds of muscle and 3 pounds of fat gained. While I’m happy with the muscle gain, I’m not so thrilled about the fat gain but I think I’ve figured out why it happened. Are you ready?

You get the idea… the problem is, during my weight loss, a weekly cheat meal (or two) was part of my weekly plan. I’d create a caloric deficit from Sunday to Thursday, then enjoy one decadent meal or treat on Friday and/or Saturday. In the end, it all balanced out so that weight loss was still achieved.

Switch to maintenance. Now, I’m eating more throughout the week and still have the mentality that I can let loose on the weekends. Clearly, that’s no longer the case; if I eat at maintenance during the week and eat way above maintenance on weekends, the overall result is a caloric surplus in excess of what I need to gain muscle (about 10-20% above maintenance). So I have two options:

1) Diet during the week, go nuts on the weekends
2) Cut back on weekend indulgences

I’ve decided to go with the second option. I’ve noticed I’ve felt a lot stronger during my workouts since switching to maintenance and it’s obviously because of the extra calories. I don’t want that to change. So it looks like I need to clean up my weekend eating habits. Does this mean I’m swearing off dessert and alcohol entirely? Never! But having both, plus a heavy meal and bread and an appetizer all in one night needs to be reserved for special occasions.

And that concludes my Thursday morning truth bomb.
