Catching Up

The work week is over and my sister’s house is still (mostly) in decent condition. For those of you catching up, Josh and I have been house sitting while my sister and her husband are vacationing in Hawaii. It’s hard work managing a household, working full-time and staying active – props to those who manage to do this on the regular, especially with kids.

The week got off to a great start – I cooked on Monday and Tuesday and made leftovers for the next day’s lunches. On Tuesday night, Josh and I went for a quick 5 km run. This was one of the first runs I’ve had where I actually enjoyed the first half more than the second. Usually, it takes me awhile to get into a running groove but I was feeling this run right off the bat. It could have been the presence of my running buddy or maybe it was just the frigid temperature motivating me to get warm as quickly as possible. It was so cold we actually busted out our Under Armour. We looked like a couple of superheroes.

By Wednesday, I started to get a little lazy in the kitchen and ended up picking up Extreme Pita after work instead of cooking. Josh was playing basketball after work, I wanted to get to Body Pump by 7:15 and everything just felt rushed. At least I opted for healthy takeout instead of junk (although Extreme Pita is stupid expensive so it’s not a habit I want to get into in any case).

On Thursday night, we met up with friends for drinks and dinner before heading to the Molson Amphitheater to watch Rock the Bells, an annual hip hop festival where prominent artists perform classic albums in their entirety. Nas and Lauryn Hill were the featured acts for the Toronto show.

Back in high school, I was big into hip hop and Nas’ Illmatic album was one of my favourites. He performed most of the songs on the album, plus a few from I Am and Nastradamus, and was joined onstage by DJ Premier, Pete Rock and AZ. Their performance was pretty much flawless.

Then it was time for Lauryn Hill to perform The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill. She was supposed to start at 9:45 but ended up being over an hour and a half late. Or so my sources tell me. I don’t know because Josh and I left not too long after Nas finished. I like old school Lauryn but I’ve heard her live performances of late have been kind of a train wreck. Besides, we were mostly there to see Nas anyway.

Apparently, we made a good call – our friends who stuck around said her performance was terrible and she messed with all of the songs, making them barely recognizable. Since we got our tickets cheap off of Groupon, I’m satisfied with what we got (Nas performing one of the best hip hop albums ever recorded) but I feel sorry for those who paid full price for tickets.

Friday was pretty low key – I went for a 5 km easy run after work, then hung out with a friend and continued my 1990s nostalgia theme by watching Interview with the Vampire. I first watched this movie when I was 8-years-old and had no idea what was going on. I really enjoyed it this time around and officially have a crush on Brad Pitt circa 1994.

Seriously, even when he was hovering in a sewer with blood on his mouth from having just fed off of a rat, my friend and I were still mesmerized by his hotness. Great movie selection for a girls’ night in. ;)

It’s been a busy week and I feel like I’ve fallen way behind on my blog reading. I hope to catch up over the weekend but first, it’s time to tackle 17 km. I just took my Gatorade out of the fridge and it is frozen — fail! Oh well, at least it will stay colder for longer?

Enjoy your weekend! :)

What’s your favourite movie from the 1990s? Favourite album?
