I’m home!
Sorry for the lack of updates while I was in Cuba, but Internet cost $10 per hour at our resort and it was dial up, which I haven’t dealt with since the nineties and don’t care to revisit. Ever. Besides, who wants to be holed up in an Internet cafe when this awaits you outside?

We had a fantastic trip – lots of sunbathing and reading on the beach, plus I got a chance to meet a reader (hi Luanne
), which was very cool. I’ll post more details about my trip throughout the week, but for now let’s check in on my attempts to maintain some of my healthy habits while on vacation. My goals were to eat healthy, indulge in moderation and get some exercise. Here’s how it went:
1. Eat healthy – There were lots of healthy options at the buffet restaurants, including squash, brussel sprouts, chicken, fish, brown rice and beans, so I tried to stick to those for the most part. When we ate at the a la carte restaurants, it was a little harder to eat healthy but I figure a few decadent meals are par for the course while on vacation. I’ll do a full post on my vacation eats next week.
2. Indulge in moderation – I stuck to my one treat, one alcoholic beverage per day rule five out of the seven days we were there and the other two days, I extended it to two. Limiting my alcohol intake was easy; I enjoy the occasional drink or two but had no desire to spend my days in a hungover stupor (sunlight + hangover = major migraine). It was, however, tough not to go overboard on the treats. I have a major sweet tooth and there were sooo many desserts and pastries on hand at all hours. I just kept reminding myself that all of the treats would still be there the next day so there was no need to eat them all at once.
3. Stay active – The fitness centre was equipped with an Olympic bar, free weights, treadmills, stationary bikes and weight machines so it was easy to get in a few quality workouts. I did two full body weights workouts and two treadmill workouts. I also did lots of walking along the beach and swimming.
So overall, I kept things pretty healthy but still enjoyed all of the perks that an all-inclusive resort has to offer. That being said, my stomach feels a little wonky today so I should probably stick to bland, easily digestible foods for the next few days. I took today off work and Monday is a provincial holiday so I have a few days to recover and get back into my routine.
Stomach issues aside, I’m glad to be home. No matter how much fun I have on vacation, I always love coming home to my own bed, seeing my friends and family again and catching up on everything (I feel so out of touch with reality after a week without Internet).
Do you like coming home from vacation or does it bum you out getting back to your routine?

We had a wonderful time in Cuba and I was so happy I got to meet you! It’s amazing that I could find you in such a large resort. You look great and you and Josh are such a cute couple.
I would like to thank you for your blog which definitely motivated me to keep working out and lose a few pounds before the trip.
Unfortunately, my plan to stay fit on vacation fell short as I gained 2 pounds. I did my beach walks, activities with the Star Friends, ate mostly chicken and lots of vegetables, but I could not stay away from the yummy desserts and pina coladas!
This is the 1st time I have gained weight on vacation! Who said the food in Cuba is not good?
I plan to get back to my workout routine and will continue to read your blog as I love all your helpful tips and recipes.
Thanks again!
Aww thank you, you are too sweet
I wouldn’t worry about those two pounds… I doubt that it’s “real” weight gain. You’re probably just retaining water from eating more salt and sugar than usual and it will go away after a few days of eating normally (same thing happened to me when I got back too). I couldn’t stay away from the desserts either… those little cakes at the buffet? Totally worth a little excess water weight
Thanks for reading!!
