Because there are no traffic jams at 6 a.m.

I picked a great day to do a morning workout because traffic on the drive home was an absolute nightmare. A tractor-trailer flipped over on the highway, which backed everything up for miles. I thought I’d be slick and bypass the mess by exiting early but, as it turns out, everybody and their momma had that idea too, so all of the main roads were clogged up.

Luckily, thanks to my half-marathon training last summer, I have an intimate knowledge of my city’s side streets and was able to get home using the least congested (albeit most circuitous) route possible. I still arrived home an hour and twenty minutes late though and by that time I was ready to gnaw off my arm.

I came home to  pasta with ricotta cheese and zucchini (I had done most of the prep work last night so I called my mom and begged her to throw everything together), promptly changed into my finest sweatpants and got down to business:

So, yeah, the last thing I feel like doing right now is leaving my house again to go to the gym so, in retrospect, I’m glad I went to BodyPump this morning instead of putting it off until later.

Reason #188723 why morning workouts are quickly becoming an ideal option: there are no traffic jams at 6 a.m.

Actually, now that it’s getting lighter outside in the mornings, it’s getting easier and easier to wake up early for the gym. It also makes me feel like less of an insane person now that it’s no longer pitch black outside when I leave my house in the morning.

While we’re on the subject of workouts (granted, I don’t write about very much else), I also did BodyStep 87 on Sunday morning.

This is such a good release – I loved every single song but the standout tracks for me were “Good Girl,” “Moves Like Jagger,” “Own This Club,” “Where Them Girls At” and “(Your Love Keeps Lifting Me) Higher and Higher.” I had a little trouble with the quick step choreography, only because my gym has shiny, hardwood floors and I was terrified that my step was going to slide out from under me (we remove the risers for that track, which makes the step a lot less stable). I’m surprised nobody wiped out.

Tomorrow, I don’t have to leave my house until 10:30 so I’m planning to do hot yoga in the morning and BodyAttack in the evening (traffic permitting). At lunch time, I have to go to a restaurant opening and sample a menu’s worth of gourmet burgers (I realize this makes it sound like I have a really cool job, but this is a one-off – I’m usually stuck in a cubicle all day) so tomorrow will probably be a good day for a double dose of exercise.

Is it wrong that I’m already looking forward to the weekend?!?

New Yoga Classes

This week, I tried three new yoga classes at Some Like It Hot. The first was Restorative Yoga on Monday night:

An amazing way to chill and completely relax. This gentle practice is perfect for everyone. Postures are supported; using very little muscle. Props, such as bolsters, blankets, straps and eye pillows (all provided) are used for your comfort. Peaceful music and candlelight allows your body & mind to rest, renew and relax and attune to the wisdom in your body.

I thought this would be a regular yoga class but done at a slower pace and with more focus on stretching and holding poses. After doing BodyPump in the morning, I was looking forward to a nice stretch but as soon as class started, I realized I was in for something completely different.

I arrived in a candlelit room, was told to grab a blanket and props and then proceeded to lie down and do nothing.

For sixty minutes.

Oh wait, at one point we propped our legs up against the wall (our second pose of the evening).

Okay, maybe I should’ve researched “restorative yoga” before I signed up, because based on the Google image search I just did to find the picture above, restorative yoga is basically just a glorified nap (a few people were even snoring in the class).  I have nothing against napping, in fact, it’s one of my favourite ways to kill time, but if I’m going to get dressed, leave my house and waste gas to go somewhere, I want to do a little more than just sleep for an hour.

I really tried to be open-minded about it. For the first few minutes, I focused on my breathing and focused on how warm and cozy I felt. Within ten minutes, however, my thoughts quickly turned to: What the fuck is this?!? Are we seriously doing this for a whole hour?!?  Yeah, it was pretty much torture. I couldn’t get out of there fast enough (although ironically, I went straight to bed afterwards to continue my “restorative” yoga practice for the next 7.5 hours).

Thursday morning’s class was much better – I did Yoga for Athletes, which could alternatively be named Yoga for People Who Sit at a Desk All Day. We spent most of the class holding  hip opener poses like this one:

This class made me realize how tight my hips are. I do hip opener poses fairly regularly but I guess I don’t hold them long enough because this was intense.

Finally, this morning, I did a class called Body Sculpting:

Sculpted arms, a strong core, tight glutes and firm legs are the focus of this challenging muscle toning workout that features muscle toning movement and stretching. All routines are set to great music. This class is for any fitness level.

I really debated with myself whether to try this class or go to BodyPump in the morning. The words “muscle toning” in the description made me wary that this would be a Barbie dumbbell sort of class but I figured that any new workout is usually effective by virtue of novelty so why not give it a shot?

The verdict? It was basically what I expected. A lot of repetitions with small dumbbells (the heaviest they had on hand were 8 pounders) and a crap ton of ab work (probably half the class was spent on abs).  On the upside, I really liked the instructor – she was warm and funny and made the class really enjoyable. I’d like to try some of her yoga classes.

Even though it wasn’t really my kind of work out (or maybe because it wasn’t really my kind of workout), I suspect I will be sore tomorrow. After class, I went for a quick 5 kilometre run to take advantage of the nice weather. So that caps off my week of workouts- Happy Sweat It Out Saturday!

Sunday – OFF
Monday – BodyPump
Tuesday – RPM
Wednesday – BodyPump
Thursday – Yoga
Friday – OFF
Saturday – Body Sculpting + 5 km run

What’s the worst class or workout you’ve ever done?

RPM 54

I haven’t had a chance to do all of the latest Les Mills releases other than BodyPump and RPM (and a sneak peek at BodyAttack) but so far, so good.

I did RPM 54 on Tuesday morning and it’s probably my favourite of the last few RPM releases. The music is fun for the first half of the release (I’m loving “San Francisco”), then ventures into some weird territory during the interval track. Check out this song:

A lot of RPM instructors and participants have been complaining about how dreadful this song is, but I didn’t hate it that much. Sure, it’s not the kind of song I’d jam to on my drive to work or anything but for 7 minutes of intense intervals? Why not?

Nothing really stands out in terms of choreography, except for the power climb track. There are only two blocks of work but they are much longer than usual. Overall, a challenging release (my legs were jello when I hopped off my bike) but fun enough that you don’t notice.  Definitely a good way to pre-emptively burn off the decadence that would later ensue on Tuesday evening.

In other news (well, it’s not really news), I made a cool fritatta last night:

It’s a mix of brown rice, sesame oil, sesame seeds, peppers, soy sauce and eggs. For anyone who’s ever had bibimbap (a Korean dish of fried egg, vegetables and rice served in a stone bowl), this tasted really similar, especially since the rice got all brown and crispy at the bottom like it does in the hot pot. Yum!

I’m looking forward to the weekend – I have plans to see a couple of girlfriends I haven’t seen in awhile on Saturday and Sunday so should be a nice, relaxing weekend.

Anything fun planned for the weekend?
