“I don’t eat for pleasure”

This morning, I read the saddest quote from Jada Pinkett Smith:

“If I could have French fries and pizza every day I would really live off that. My real diet though, well, I don’t eat for pleasure. I probably had the only West Indian grandmother that could not cook. She was an awful cook, and she taught me that you don’t eat for taste, you eat for nourishment. And I have kept that over the years, so I can eat anything that’s healthy.”

Ugh. People who only eat for nourishment are like people who only have sex to procreate - lame and I would never want to date you.

Obviously, I’m on board with the whole eating for nourishment thing – I’d say about 80% of what I eat is nutritous, natural food that I know will make me look and feel my best. But it has to taste good or I won’t eat it.

I just hate the implication that healthy food has to be bland and unappetizing – it’s soooo not true and I think it deters people from wanting to improve their diets, especially people like me who love the sensory experience of eating. There’s no way I could stick to a healthy diet if I didn’t like the taste of what I was eating but I’ve found so many healthy foods that I derive pleasure from and that makes sticking to my diet easy.

Anyway, that’s my little Friday morning rant - Jada, you have a smokin’ bod, but if you seriously don’t take any pleasure in most of what you eat, I feel bad for you. I wouldn’t trade in the pleasurable aspect of eating for anything, not even your triceps.

Speaking of eating for pleasure, last night my family and I went out for dinner to a fantastic little Italian restaurant to celebrate my sister’s birthday. I ordered the vegetarian pizza.

The great thing about ordering pizza (other than the cheese) is that it’s easy to keep your portions in check, whereas when you get a massive dish of other types of food, it can be hard to keep track of how much you’ve eaten. I ate 2.5 slices and took the rest to go. Can’t wait for lunch today! ;)

I’m also excited for the weekend - I’m doing dinner and a movie with a girlfriend tonight, going to Canada’s Wonderland with Josh and some friends tomorrow, another birthday celebration for my sister on Sunday and a BBQ with friends on Sunday night. This week, I managed to cross a bunch of house tasks off my to-do list (booked movers, set up hydro and gas and settled on a mortgage finally) so I’m not even stressing over having a totally indulgent weekend.

Have a good one!

What do you think of Jada’s quote?

  1. That is so sad! I mean food is what gives our body life so why not enjoy it? I think there is a way to make healthy food delicious and also plenty of room for those fun foods. Eek I just am not a fan of that perspective at all.

  2. What a sucky philosophy. Ugh, seriously … that is the worst. I am NOT interested in food if it doesn’t taste good. Taste, texture, temperature – that’s what makes eating enjoyable. I’m not happy because my stomach is full. I’m happy because I enjoyed chowing down!

Sounds like you have an awesome weekend ahead of you! Enjoy!

  3. Hey there – I just discovered your blog, while trying to find out how bad a burrito boyz burrito is!!! lol. I really like what I see so far – I am going to start poking through your blog regularily and will put a link up to you on my own blog! Gotta love our fellow TO bloggers :)

You’d be surprised how many people end up on this blog by looking up how bad a Burrito Boyz burrito is (which actually isn’t TOO bad if you go easy on the size and portions!) Can’t wait to look through your site – I love finding new Canadian blogs!

  4. Wow. And what a great example she’s setting for her daughter! I didn’t actually read the whole quote when the saw the article headline on websites because I thought surely what she’d said had been taken out of context?!

That is really sad. I absolutely agree with you, healthy food can taste great! If it doesn’t, I won’t eat it!

Congrats on getting so much achieved :-) when do you move?

    Have a great weekend!

We’re moving at the end of this month!! I’m excited but getting a little overwhelmed with everything that needs to be done (which I’m sure you can relate to having just moved and trying to plan a wedding ;) ) I hope you’re able to decide on a date!

that really bothers me too because I feel like there is so much more to food than just nourishment – its the atmosphere and the fun of eating different flavors.

I think it’s sad. Of course you need to nourish your body but I can’t imagine eating something I hated just because it was better for me than something I loved. Craziness!
