Latest Obsessions

I normally blog a lot on weekends but decided to take a little break from it this weekend. I didn’t have anything too exciting planned and the weather has been crappy, leaving me totally uninspired.

Since I don’t have any pics or stories to share, instead I’m gonna fill you in on a few of my latest obsessions. Most of them are food related (shocker!):

1. Cinnamon

I really didn’t think peanut butter and banana on toast could get any more delicious. Then, one morning, I randomly decided to sprinkle a bit of pour cinnamon on top. Great idea (since this photo was taken, I’ve managed to perfect the art of sprinkling).

2. Game of Thrones

I am not a bandwagon jumper (still haven’t read Twilight, thank you very much), nor am I a fan of fantasy in general, but I’m inexplicably obsessed with Game of Thrones. I watched the pilot last Saturday and decided to buy the book, which I’m thoroughly enjoying. The plan is to read the book and follow along with the TV show. Nerd alert!

3. Eating almond butter out of the jar

Okay, back to nut butter. I find that when I get to the bottom of the jar, the almond butter is all hard and difficult to spread. My solution – I just remove toast from the equation altogether and eat that shit right out of the jar. Way better than ice cream. On that note, I just realized I’m all out of almond butter. How did I let this happen?!?

4. Alexia Sweet Potato Fries

These were on sale at Whole Foods a few weeks ago so I picked up a bag – a-maz-ing! Honestly, these are almost as good as the bar version (you know, the deep-fried kind that go perfectly with a pitcher of beer) and only 130 calories a serving.

5. Ontario strawberries

Finally, strawberries are in season! I picked up a pint at my local grocery store yesterday and they are sooo much better than the ones I’ve been eating all winter.

6. Lady Gaga’s new album

I wasn’t crazy about this album when I first listened to it but it’s since grown on me. Big Time. My favourite songs are Marry the Night, Government Hooker, Hair, Sheibe, Bad Kids, Born This Way, Judas, Edge of Glory… okay that’s like over half the album. But even the songs I’m not obsessed with are pretty decent.

7. Logging my workouts on Fitocracy

Sometimes, it takes longer to log my workouts than it does to actually do them. But I can’t help myself. I’m vying for first place among Josh and all of his cousins; I’m currently in second. It’s killing me.

I feel like I should come up with three more to make this an even 10 but this is all I’ve got. And that’s the nice thing about blogging – if I was submitting this to the magazine, my editor would for sure make me feign interest in three other things just to round it out. Yay for self-publishing! ;)

What foods/books/music/websites are you currently obsessed with?

Week in Review:

Last week, I committed to eating a little healthier and stepping up my workouts. For the most part, I stuck to the plan, with a few little adjustments:

Monday RPM + NROL4W Stage 1 Workout A Body Flow
Tuesday Body Attack NROL4W 1A + 20 minutes elliptical
Wednesday Boot Camp
Thursday NROL4W Stage 1 Workout B
Friday Rest
Saturday Body Pump

I’m now finished Stage 1 of NROL4W so I’m taking a week off to do whatever I want at the gym. The plan for this week:

Sunday Boot Camp
Monday RPM
Tuesday Body Attack
Wednesday Boot Camp
Thursday Body Flow or Rest
Friday Body Pump
Saturday Run or indoor cardio

Okay, back to Game of Thrones.

A Birthday and an Announcement

I usually work on Tuesdays but since yesterday was my sister’s birthday, I switched up my schedule so I could spend the day with her. First, I took her for lunch at Stoney’s, our favourite sandwich place in Oakville. We took advantage of the warm weather and ate on the patio (first patio lunch of the summer!). I got the blackened Atlantic salmon sandwich and she ordered the lemon chicken sandwich. Perfection:

After lunch, we went shopping at Seven Women, a trendy maternity boutique in North York. What were we doing at a maternity clothing store you ask?

This brings me to the announcement part of my post — I’m going to be an auntie!!! I’ve known since early May but of course we were trying to keep it on the DL until the first trimester was over (which didn’t work out so well; most of our friends and family found out weeks ago… oops).

If you’re pregnant and live in the GTA, you should definitely check out Seven Women. It’s a little pricey but everything they sell is super cute. I kinda wished I was pregnant just so I could buy some things too… just kidding… sort of.

Our shopping trip concluded at Square One mall in Mississauga, where I picked up this outfit at Aritzia:

I don’t know about you, but I find it so much more fun to shop for clothes in the summer. I tend to dress like a bum for most of the winter, but once the warm weather hits, I’m all about looking cute. I can’t wait to wear this little outfit for my day date with Josh on Friday (details to come).

In the evening, I had to head to Toronto for a work event. The magazine I write for was nominated for an award (we didn’t win… boo!), so we all attended the awards dinner and presentation. It was painfully boring but at least the food was good (chicken stuffed with pancetta and cheese, garlic mashed potatoes and roasted vegetables… mmm!).

Yesterday was the third out of four “write-off days” this week in terms of diet, but I’ve been more than making up for it at the gym. On Tuesday, I did the New Rules of Lifting for Women Stage 1, Workout A followed by a 50 minute RPM class and this morning, I did another boot camp class. I’m now at Level 7 on Fitocracy.  Woo-hoo!

Survival of the Fittest: Join the Fitocracy

Yesterday, Josh’s cousins told me about a fitness website called Fitocracy. Similar to other activity tracking websites, you can use Fitocracy to log your daily workouts. The difference here is that you compete against other members to earn points for your workouts and advance to higher levels.

In addition to logging your regular workouts, you can also participate in “quests” by performing extra exercises for bonus points when prompted.

I had to try this out for myself but when I went to the website, I discovered you need an invite code to join. No worries – one google search and a few failed login attempts later and I had successfully registered. I logged this morning’s New Rules of Lifting for Women workout, which earned me 219 points and advanced me to Level 2.

I am currently in 5,659th place on the Leaderboard but just wait… I am gonna run this mofo soon enough!

Today’s workout kicked my butt. For the past few weeks, I’ve been breezing through Workout A but today the combination of heavier weights and extra sets had me sweating up something fierce. Time to park my butt on the couch and watch one of the million DVDs I bought on Saturday!
