Long Weekend Recap

Hi there and happy Monday. I’m just winding down from a really fun and relaxing long weekend. Here’s a little recap for you before the work week starts all over again.

I usually do BodyPump at 6:15 on Friday mornings but since I took the day off, I was able to sleep in and go to a later class.

BODYPUMP76

We did BodyPump 76 and, I don’t know why, but this workout killed me. You know that feeling you get when you try a tough workout for the very first time and your body is like “WTF did you just do to me?”

That’s how my legs felt all weekend. I have no idea why that happened – I used my regular weights and it’s not like I’ve taken time off or anything.

After Pump, I went out for lunch with my mom and did some Christmas shopping (I’m about halfway done, which is a new record for me).

In the evening, I met up with my girlfriends in Toronto for what was possibly the best girls’ night out I’ve had in a long time. We went to a jewelry store in Kensington market and learned to make necklaces. It was just the four of us and the store owner, plus two bottles of wine and pizza.

After we finished our necklaces (mine is the green one), we went back to my friend’s apartment, drank some more and gossiped. Josh was nice enough to pick me up and drive me home, earning some major good boyfriend points.

On Saturday morning, several things conspired against my plan to go to the gym. One, I was super sore from Friday. Two, I was hungover and tired. Three, I left my car at the train station the night before.

So, yeah, the workout wasn’t happening. Instead Josh and I went out for all you can eat Thai, where I literally ate all I could eat (I sampled a little bit of everything).

In the evening, Josh and I had a chill night – we ate in and watched Breaking Bad and I went to bed at 10 p.m. while Josh went out with his boys to watch UFC. So we both got a chance to hang out with our friends this weekend, which was nice.

On Sunday, my sister and I went to RPM. I’ve done enough freestyle spin classes now to say with absolute certainty that I much prefer the RPM format. It’s more fun and a way better workout than any of the freestyle classes I’ve been to.

Later in the afternoon, I made a test batch of chocolate chip blondies for a bake exchange we’re doing at work tomorrow. This was my first attempt at baking at baking and I clearly need more practice – I was mixing together the flour, baking powder and salt when Josh walked into the kitchen and said, “Wow, you’re using a lot of corn starch.”

That’s when I realized I had taken the wrong box from the cupboard and was using corn starch instead of flour.

Luckily, I hadn’t added it to the other bowl with the sugar, eggs, vanilla and butter, otherwise I would have had to throw the whole thing out. Thanks to Josh’s intervention, the blondies turned out well.

Today, I started my day with a BodyAttack class followed by CXWORX. I then met up with a girlfriend for lunch, visited my sister and nephew and went home to make another batch of blondies for tomorrow’s bake exchange (I used Christmas coloured M&Ms for the second batch).

So that’s my weekend in a nutshell. This week will hopefully fly by as we have the bake exchange tomorrow and our holiday lunch on Thursday. I love this time of year!

For anyone who bakes, were you always good at it or did it take a few “face palm” moments for you to perfect it?

Any fun holiday stuff coming up?

RPM 54

I haven’t had a chance to do all of the latest Les Mills releases other than BodyPump and RPM (and a sneak peek at BodyAttack) but so far, so good.

I did RPM 54 on Tuesday morning and it’s probably my favourite of the last few RPM releases. The music is fun for the first half of the release (I’m loving “San Francisco”), then ventures into some weird territory during the interval track. Check out this song:

A lot of RPM instructors and participants have been complaining about how dreadful this song is, but I didn’t hate it that much. Sure, it’s not the kind of song I’d jam to on my drive to work or anything but for 7 minutes of intense intervals? Why not?

Nothing really stands out in terms of choreography, except for the power climb track. There are only two blocks of work but they are much longer than usual. Overall, a challenging release (my legs were jello when I hopped off my bike) but fun enough that you don’t notice.  Definitely a good way to pre-emptively burn off the decadence that would later ensue on Tuesday evening.

In other news (well, it’s not really news), I made a cool fritatta last night:

It’s a mix of brown rice, sesame oil, sesame seeds, peppers, soy sauce and eggs. For anyone who’s ever had bibimbap (a Korean dish of fried egg, vegetables and rice served in a stone bowl), this tasted really similar, especially since the rice got all brown and crispy at the bottom like it does in the hot pot. Yum!

I’m looking forward to the weekend – I have plans to see a couple of girlfriends I haven’t seen in awhile on Saturday and Sunday so should be a nice, relaxing weekend.

Anything fun planned for the weekend?

Babysitting and Baking

My new favourite way to approach the weekend is this – get all of my errands out of the way on Saturday so I can spend Sunday doing whatever I want.

And that’s exactly what I did today.

My day started out with an RPM class, which I hadn’t been to for a month. This particular instructor is my absolute favourite RPM instructor but I needed a break from it, which is why I hadn’t been in so long. The result? I was so deconditioned! I can’t remember the last time RPM felt so hard. Luckily, I took Friday and Saturday off from the gym so my legs were fresh and ready to work. It felt good to be back. Sometimes, you just need a little time off from an activity to get your enthusiasm for it back.

After class, I showered, grabbed a chicken sandwich from SUBWAY and headed to my sister’s to babysit my nephew while she and her husband went out for lunch. They rarely get to go out just the two of them these days so I thought it would be nice to give them a chance to spend the day together, as well as a chance for me to spend some quality time with my nephew.

This was my first time looking after him alone (actually, my first time looking after any baby) and it went pretty well. He slept through most of it actually and I got to watch Saved By the Bell reruns, read and help myself to my sister’s chocolate stash.

In the afternoon, my sister and I went to a pay what you can yoga class, which is quickly becoming my favourite way to unwind on a Sunday evening.

After yoga, I cooked Spicy Soba Noodles with Chicken in Peanut Sauce, a recipe that Tina from Carrots ‘n’ Cake recommended. I’m a sucker for anything with peanut butter so this was a winner in my book. Too bad the finished product wasn’t more photogenic:

I guess babysitting unearthed my domestic side because after dinner I got the urge to bake, which I have never done before. The thing is, if I feel like treats, I usually just buy them from a bakery. I figure it’s safer that way (hello, portion control!), doesn’t leave a mess behind and you know they’re guaranteed to taste good. But I had fun making these Almond Butter Chocolate Chip Cookies.

I had even more fun eating them!

After a perfect, relaxed day, I feel more than ready to take on the work week.

What’s your favourite way to unwind on a Sunday?
